Löwendenkmal

For Cee’s Photo Challenge: Animals

When my future wife first showed me this incredible statue I was wholly unprepared for how affected I would be it. It remains one of the most moving works of art I have yet seen.

from Wikipedia: The Lion Monument (GermanLöwendenkmal), or the Lion of Lucerne, is a rock relief in LucerneSwitzerland, designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. It commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
